Can Sound Actually Improve Your Skin? What the Research Says, and What It Doesn't
There is something real in the link between sound, the nervous system and the skin, and a lot of nonsense online too. Here is what the research actually supports, and what it does not.
If you've ever typed "frequency for clear skin" into YouTube, you'll know what comes back. Hour-long tracks promising to stimulate epidermal growth factor. Subliminal videos for "perfect complexion." Spotify playlists claiming a specific Hz can heal acne, fade scars, regenerate collagen on demand.
I started Skin Resonance because I think there is something real in the connection between sound, the nervous system, and the skin. I also think most of what's online about it is nonsense, and the nonsense is doing the real science a disservice. So this is the piece I wish had existed when I first started looking into all this. What does the research actually say? Where does the evidence run out? And is any of it useful if you're standing in front of the mirror at 11pm wondering why your skin looked better on holiday?
Let's go through it carefully.
What the science actually shows
Three things are reasonably well established in the literature. None of them, on their own, is the claim that sound makes your skin clearer. But stitched together, they're more interesting than the individual parts.
One: certain kinds of sound measurably reduce stress markers in the body.
A 2024 systematic review in the International Journal of Stress Management looked at randomised controlled trials of binaural beats used outside clinical settings. Of the studies measuring physiological stress, all five showed significant differences between the binaural beat groups and the controls. That meant lower salivary cortisol, lower alpha-amylase (another stress biomarker), changes you can pick up on a saliva test rather than just a self-reported mood survey. The authors were careful. They called the overall picture "promising but equivocal," because methodologies varied and the field is still young. But the physiological signal is there.
A 2022 study using fNIRS brain imaging found that 16Hz binaural beats produced significant decreases in alpha-amylase. A pilot trial published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice in 2020 found that theta binaural beats produced more parasympathetic dominance, the body's "rest and digest" state, when participants were put through the Trier Social Stress Test, a standardised laboratory stressor that's been used in research for decades.
This isn't a fringe claim. Sound, used in a structured way, can shift the body out of fight-or-flight. The evidence isn't overwhelming, but it isn't nothing either.
Two: stress hormones, especially cortisol, demonstrably affect the skin.
This part isn't contested. A paper in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology on stress and acne in medical students laid out the mechanism plainly. When you're stressed, your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activates. That releases corticotropin-releasing hormone, which goes on to stimulate sebaceous glands. More sebum, plus inflammation, plus a compromised skin barrier, equals exactly the kind of breakouts most adults recognise from their worst weeks at work.
If you've ever wondered why your skin reacts to a deadline before your conscious mind does, that's the answer. The pathway is well mapped. Cortisol is genuinely bad for skin in chronic doses.
Three: sleep is when most skin repair happens, and poor sleep makes everything worse.
A 2025 review in MDPI Dermatology Reports on what they call the "sleep-skin axis" found that people with poorer self-reported sleep had measurably greater transepidermal water loss, the dryness signal that tells you a skin barrier is struggling. Sleep deprivation also raises cortisol on its own, separately from psychological stress. So a bad night's sleep is, biochemically, a stressful event your skin registers.
A 2025 paper in Archives of Dermatological Research reviewed 66 studies and concluded that poor sleep accelerates skin ageing and reduces collagen production. Sleep is when growth hormone peaks. It's when cell turnover ramps up. If you're not getting enough of it, or the quality is poor, your skin loses one of its most important repair windows every night.
So where does that leave us?
Three findings. Each one has decent evidence behind it. Sound can lower stress markers. Stress hormones harm skin. Poor sleep harms skin.
What you cannot find in the literature is a study that takes the whole chain and tests it as a single hypothesis. Nobody has run a six-month trial where one group listens to binaural beats every night and the other doesn't, then photographed everyone's faces and measured their hydration. That study would be expensive, hard to blind, and hasn't been done.
So when I see YouTube videos claiming a specific frequency stimulates epidermal growth factor, or that listening to a particular tone "heals acne," I genuinely don't know where they're getting it. The evidence I've read says no such thing. What it says is more modest and, I think, more useful: if you can lower your cortisol and sleep better, your skin will be in a better position to do its own work. Sound is one of several tools that can help with that.
Why the moment matters
Cortisol is having a moment. "Cortisol face" became a TikTok phrase last year. Adrenal-balancing supplements are everywhere. The mechanism behind all of it isn't new, dermatologists have been writing about stress and skin for decades, but the cultural attention is.
What's missing from most of the conversation is the practical question. Once you accept that chronic stress is doing visible damage to your face, what do you actually do about it at 10pm on a Wednesday? Most of the answers on offer are either expensive (a £180 night cream with adaptogens) or aspirational in a way that doesn't survive contact with a normal week (an hour of yoga, a meditation retreat, a complete career change).
A wind-down audio practice is one of the few interventions that's free in principle, takes ten to twenty minutes, and is supported by actual physiological data. You can do it lying in bed. You don't need to learn a technique. That's why I'm interested in it. Not because sound is magic, but because it's one of the few stress interventions that doesn't ask anything of a tired person.
The bit nobody talks about: stacking it with what you already do
Here's the thing that doesn't come up in any of the YouTube videos. If you already own a red light mask, a gua sha, a microcurrent device, or just a serum and a moisturiser, you already have a twenty-minute window every evening where you're sat doing skincare. You're already there. Adding sound on top costs you nothing extra in time.
This is the part of the practice I find most interesting, and it's why Skin Resonance is built the way it is. Most people who care about their skin already have a routine. They've spent money on tools. The problem isn't that they need a new product. It's that the routine is often happening at the end of a stressful day, in a state where the skin barrier is already compromised by elevated cortisol, and the products are working uphill against the body chemistry.
Sequencing the audio with the routine flips the maths. Twenty minutes of theta binaural beats while you have your red light mask on. Ten minutes of solfeggio tones during the part of your routine where you'd usually be scrolling your phone. The skincare gets a calmer body to work on. The audio practice gets done without you needing to find new time for it.
What you could try tonight
If you want to test the principle without any commitment, here's what the research suggests would be reasonable.
Spend the last twenty minutes before sleep deliberately calming your nervous system rather than stimulating it. That's the active ingredient. Whether you do it through sound, breathwork, a hot bath, or putting your phone in another room, the goal is the same: get your parasympathetic system online before you try to sleep.
If you want to try sound specifically, pick a track in the lower frequency ranges (theta or delta, roughly 4 to 8 Hz for theta and below 4 Hz for delta). Use stereo headphones, because binaural beats only work as a binaural effect when each ear gets a slightly different tone. Twenty minutes is enough. You don't need to fall asleep with them on.
Don't expect anything dramatic in the first week. The cortisol-skin relationship plays out over days and weeks, not hours. What you might notice first is sleeping more soundly. The skin changes, if they come, follow that.

A note on why I built this. I'm a piano composer, so I'd been thinking about frequencies for a long time before any of this connected to skin. The whole world, every living thing, runs on them. Once you start looking, it's hard to stop. I tried the Schumann resonance on myself first and the calming effect was unmistakable. Other frequencies took the edge off migraines I'd had for years. From there I went and read the research on stress, cortisol and skin, and the practical appeal landed straight away. I'm a mum of three. I don't have time for an evening ritual. I stick my headphones on, lie down for twenty minutes, and that's it.

Do binaural beats actually work, or is it placebo?+
The most rigorous review on this so far, a 2024 systematic review in the International Journal of Stress Management, found that all five randomised controlled trials measuring physiological stress (rather than self-reported mood) showed real, measurable effects, including reductions in salivary cortisol. So the physiological effect appears to be more than placebo. That said, the researchers were careful to call the overall picture "promising but equivocal," meaning the field is still young and individual results vary. The most reasonable summary is that something is happening at the nervous system level, but the size and consistency of the effect is still being mapped.
Do I need headphones for Skin Resonance to work?+
For the binaural beat steps, yes. Binaural beats work because each ear receives a slightly different tone, and the brain perceives a third "beat" frequency from the difference. Without stereo headphones, that effect doesn't happen. Solfeggio tones (174 Hz, 285 Hz, 396 Hz, 528 Hz, 741 Hz) work through speakers as well as headphones, since they're single frequencies rather than binaural. Inside the app, every step is marked with a small headphone icon if it requires them, so you can run a full routine on speakers if you prefer, you'll just be using the solfeggio steps rather than the binaural ones.
How long until I see a difference in my skin?+
The cortisol-skin relationship plays out over days and weeks, not hours, so realistic expectations matter. Most people notice they're sleeping more deeply within the first week, which is the leading indicator. Visible skin changes (less reactivity, fewer stress-related breakouts, calmer redness) typically follow over the next two to four weeks if the practice is consistent. None of this is fast in the way an injectable or a strong active is fast, but it's also working with your physiology rather than against it. Think of it as the same kind of timeline you'd expect from genuinely improving your sleep, because in many ways that's what it is.
Can I use this alongside my existing skincare and devices like a red light mask?+
Yes, this is actually how the app is designed to be used. The "With skincare" mode in Skin Resonance sequences your tools (red light mask, gua sha, jade roller, microcurrent device, serums, moisturiser) into the audio routine in the right order. Active treatments come early, when you need to engage with them. Restorative steps come at the end, when you can lie still and let the audio do its work. The first time you use this mode, the app asks what tools you have, then adapts each routine to fit. Nothing about Skin Resonance asks you to replace your existing routine, the practice layers on top of what you already do.
Is this the same as listening to relaxing music or a meditation app?+
Related, but not the same. Music and meditation can both lower cortisol, and either is better than nothing. The difference with Skin Resonance is twofold. First, the frequencies used (the Schumann resonance at 7.83 Hz, delta at 2 Hz, the solfeggio tones) are the specific ones that have been studied in the research on stress reduction and parasympathetic activation, rather than music chosen for taste. Second, the routines are sequenced for evening use and built around the skin specifically, rather than for general meditation. If you already love a meditation app you trust, keep using it.
